Torch Backs Section 28 Reform

David Davis MP

Gay Conservatives have backed the Conservative Party's proposals on Section 28 which have been announced by Shadow Deputy Prime Minister David Davis MP.

The Party's proposals will:

- Give MPs a free vote, allowing the abolition of Section 28;
- Put into legislation existing Statutory Guidance which protects school children from stigmatisation over sexual orientation, and prohibits the promotion of any sexual orientation;
- Allow parents to examine sex education materials, and if there is a significant numbers of objections trigger a vote.

‘This is an important development which actually goes further than Labour's plain abolitionists. What the Conservatives are proposing will allow the abolition of Section 28, prohibit stigmatisation over sexual orientation, and give greater control of parents over the education of their children.

‘Labour have no plans to offer this protection in legislation to children, and do not want parents to have greater control over their kids' education.
