Michael Howard is new Conservative Leader

Gay Conservatives have welcomed Michael Howard as the new leader of the Conservative Party.

James Davenport, chairman of Gay Conservatives, said, 'Michael Howard offers experience and ability. He'll lead the Party from the centre.

'The Conservatives now offer a strong alternative to Labour's weak government and petty meddling.'

Michael Howard, as Shadow Chancellor, supported the review of Section 28 and claimed 'part-authorship' of the Party's current policy programme, including the support of civil partnerships.

Michael Howard has held a wide variety of positions in government, best remembered as the Home Secretary who turned the tide of crime and reduced it by 15%. The strength of support in the Party for his leadership has been indicated from the beginning, with no other Conservative willing to stand against him.

The Conservative Party Board has announced that there will not now be a ratification ballot. Gay Conservatives welcomed this news, saying that 'there are better things for a political party to spend a quarter of a million pounds on than an election with only one candidate'.
