Torche Meets with Oliver Letwin on Adoption Bill

Oliver Letwin MP

Andy Jennings (Chairman), and James Davenport (Deputy Chairman) have met with Oliver Letwin to discuss the Conservative Party's position on the Adoption and Children Bill.

Speaking outside the Houses of Parliament after their meeting with the Shadow Home Secretary, James Davenport said:

'We have had a very constructive meeting with Oliver and can confirm that the Party's policy and our position are one and the same.

'It is very important to end the scandal of thousands of children being brought up in care homes in this country - the least appropriate place for most of them to be.

'However, there are many ways in which the Government could increase the number of couples eligible to adopt. For a start they could abandon the policies of many Labour and Lib Dem

councils, banning mixed-race couples, or couples where there is a particular age difference between the partners, from adopting. One mixed-race couple in then Labour-run Islington were told that they "hadn't experienced enough racism" to adopt.

'Torche believes that children should ideally have the very different kinds of emotional support that a mother and a father bring to a family relationship. As a result, given there are better ways to increase the opportunities for children to be adopted, we are not in favour of the Government's proposals.

'It is important to remember that adoption is not a "gay rights" issue - nobody has the right to adopt, gay or straight. There is only the right of a child to a stable and emotionally fulfilling family home'.
