Labour Fail Gay Community

Torch Chairman James Davenport

James Davenport, Torch chairman, today condemned Labour's failure to reform public services for the gay community.

Speaking to an audience of Conservative activists, James said: 'After 6 years of Labour in power, their failure is really hitting the gay community.

'Hate crime is up - violent crime has increased almost a third in a year.

'HIV infections have spiralled under Labour - 19 000 more infections since they took power in 1997.

'Labour have delivered very little for the gay community since they took power in 1997.

This year's local elections are the perfect opportunity to show Labour what we think of their failure.'

Figures released by Torch show that new HIV infections have risen considerably under Labour. Before 1997, new annual infection rates averaged about 2 500 per year. Under Labour they are approaching 5 000 per year.

Similarly, Home Office statistics analysed by Torch show that violent crime - including hate crime - has risen massively under Labour. These increases are not the result of rising crime overall, since many offences have shown a decrease.

Despite the hard work of NHS staff, and the continuing local efforts of police forces to work with the gay community, Labour's failure on these key indicators mean that gay people are worse off under Labour.
