Davenport Launches Attack on Labour

James Davenport

James Davenport, Torch's chairman, today launched a scathing attack on Labour's betrayal of the gay community.

Speaking in London, Davenport said that Tony Blair had taken the votes of gay people for granted: 'Labour assumed that most gay people will carry on voting for them until the end of time. So what have they delivered in return? Quite apart from the higher taxes and crumbling public services that everyone else has to put up with as well, Labour have delivered nothing but betrayal. Tony Blair made so many promises of delivery, but all of those promises have been broken.

'Where reform has taken place, it has been as a result of backbench amendment - not Government policy.

Labour even fought in the European Courts to keep the ban on gay people in the armed forces.

'Hate crime is up under Labour. Gay people are no longer safe on the streets. And yet David Blunkett cares so little for the gay community that the Home Office does not even monitor hate crime against gay people.

'The Conservatives are now the only main party in Britain which will deliver for the gay community. We have made pledges on a range of policy areas on which we will deliver when we form the next government.'
