Conference Fringe 'A Resounding Success'

James Davenport

James Davenport, Chairman of Torch, has hailed the 2002 Conservative Conference fringe 'a resounding success'.

Starting with a big-screen video outlining Labour's failure to deliver on its promises to the gay community, and the progress within the Conservative Party, the event then moved to a Question Time-style debate. Panelists were Angela Mason - Director of Stonewall; Cllr Brian Coleman GLA - Conservative Group, Greater London Authority; John Bowis OBE MEP - Conservatives in the European Parliament; and James Davenport - Chairman of Torch.

James Davenport, Chairman of Torche, said at the meeting:

'We've come a long, long way in a few short months. The Conservative Party is reconnecting with its core value of individual freedom, and this can only be good for the gay community. Theresa May was right when she said that if we want to return to power we have to trust the people with their own lives; after all, that's just what Conservatism is all about.'

John Bowis told the meeting about the steps that Conservatives in the European Parliament are taking to help the gay community, whilst Brian Coleman outlined the positive agenda being put forward by London's Conservatives. Angela Mason spoke of her optimism in the light of this year's conference.

Alan Duncan, who earlier this year became the first openly gay Conservative MP, attended the meeting and was delighted at his warm reception.

Torch's next major event will be the Annual Gala Dinner, 10 December. Details from jfraserhowells@gayconservatives.com
