Gay Conservatives Announce Fringe Event

James Davenport

Gay Conservatives have announced details of their fringe event at the Conservative Party conference.

Torche, the Gay Conservatives organisation, is to hold a major fringe meeting at the Conservative Party conference. Starting with a presentation outlining Labour's failure to deliver on its promises to the gay community and the progress within the Conservative Party, the event will then move to a Question Time-style debate. Details of speakers will be announced nearer the time. Following this there will be entertainment until midnight.

James Davenport, Chairman of Torche, today commented:

'This major event will encompass all parts of the Conservatives' reconnection with the gay community. There will be a presentation on Labour's shameful record on gay issues; it will also show how the Conservative Party is changing, reflecting the nation we seek to lead. There will be genuine debate and an open floor, all part of the Conservative Party's efforts to listen and learn. And in the best traditions of Conservative conference, all this serious stuff will be followed by excellent entertainment.'

In 2000, the Torche event was judged Best Conference Fringe Event by The Independent. Up to 250 people attend the meeting. Further announcements, including details of panellists, will be made nearer the time.

Torche's conference fringe will be held at the Marsham Court Hotel on Tuesday 8 October, starting at 8:30pm. It will be outside the conference secure area and therefore open to all.
