Conservative Leadership Back Civil Partnerships

Shadow Secretary of State for Trade & Industry Tim Yeo MP

Commenting in response to the news that the Government has unveiled proposals to give gay and lesbian couples the same legal rights as married couples through civil partnerships, the Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Tim Yeo MP said:

“Conservative MPs will have a free vote on Government proposals to change the law to allow same-sex couples the same legal rights as married people.

“I welcome the recognition that people in committed relationships will now have the chance to clear up any doubts over areas such as their pension entitlements, inheritance issues and next of kin status.

“It is right that those people that have been victims of discrimination in the past will now have this opportunity.

“This does not detract in any way from the status of marriage, which evidence shows is still the preferred choice of many couples, and provides an excellent framework for couples bringing up children.”

Chairman of Gay Conservatives, James Davenport, welcomed the Conservative Party's response:

"The Conservative Party represents Britain in all its diversity. I welcome this policy decision by the shadow cabinet, which will contribute to fair rights for gay couples.

"Oliver Letwin indicated early last year that we would produce solutions to the many discriminations currently faced by gay people: this policy is the fairest and most sensible way to deal with those problems."
