Torch Granted Specialist Group Status by Conservative Party

Conservative Central Office: Confirmed affiliation.

Torch - Gay Conservatives have been granted Specialist Group Status by the Conservative Party.

Chairman James Davenport welcomed the decision. He said: "This is great news for the gay community and for the Conservative Party. We've worked closely with the Party in the past, but the Board's decision means that we will work closer still. We are now a policy-advising organisation right at the heart of the Conservative Party.

"Conservatives want a fair deal for the gay community. This doesn't mean special treatment - it just means the state treating individuals according to their circumstances. Conservative Party intends to address the discriminations faced by gay people, and we will be working closely with the Party to help formulate the right policies."

Conservative Central Office confirmed at the end of 2002 that Torch - Gay Conservatives would be granted affiliation to the Party as a Specialist Group, dependent upon an assessment of the organisation's constitution by the Constitution Committee. Following this assessment, and following several minor adjustments to the constitution, the Party Board has granted affiliation.
