Party Signals Affiliation Approval

Conservative Central Office

A Conservative Party spokesman has confirmed to The Times that Torch's application for affiliation as a special group has been approved by the Party Board.

Reacting to the news, Chairman James Davenport welcomed what he called a 'victory for the Conservative Party, and for the gay community'.

He continued: 'The Conservatives are reconnecting with the gay community. In many areas now, we are leading the debate on gay issues. It was the Conservatives who proposed partnership rights for gay couples - Labour are finally catching up, though they are unlikely to deliver.

'The Conservatives believe that it is for the individual to live their lives the way they want, and not for the state to live it for them.

'This is a principle with which almost every gay man and woman up and down the country would agree. The Conservatives are now streets ahead of Labour on gay issues'.

The Conservative Party spokesman told The Times that, subject to the technical approval of the Party's Constitutional Committee, Torch's affiliation as a special group would be announced in the new year.
