Torch to Apply for Affiliation to the Conservative Party

The Party Board at Conservative Central Office rules on applications

Torch is to apply to affiliate to the Conservative Party. At its AGM on 8 September 2002, Torch members unanimously approved a new constitution allowing the application to proceed.

James Davenport, Chairman of Torch, commented:

'This is a major step forward for Torch. If our application is accepted, it will mean that we are a policy-advising organisation right at the heart of the Conservative Party. Our decision is based on two factors: We want to help the Conservative Party as much as possible to represent all aspects of British culture, we want to be in the best position to help the gay community. Becoming an Affiliated Organisation will allow Torch to deliver on these aims as effectively as possible.

'It is significant that Torch has decided to affiliate to the Party now. Iain Duncan Smith has made very clear that the Conservative Party is open to all who share our views, and that it welcomes the diversity which exists in Britain. Torch will help the Party reflect that diversity.'
